Mark Northover
Head of Centre
Mark has a background as a school teacher (Maths and Sciences) and professional developer in tertiary institutions. His main areas of experience and interest relate to the effective use of learning technologies. Key to this is the level of learner engagement, learning situated in social contexts, and assessment tasks that are authentic, productive, and are well aligned with the required outcomes of the course.
Pam Wyse
Centre Manager
As Centre Manager I am responsible for the administrative needs and day to day operations of the Centre for Learning and Teaching. I provide administrative support for the Director and other Centre staff for activities and special projects for which they are responsible. Customer service is an important part of my role.

Dr Nell Buissink
Senior Academic Adviser
With the Ako Aronui team, I provide professional development and recognition for all AUT teaching staff. I am involved in the embedding of attributes such as citizenship, ethics and kindness across the university. My primary interests are in the well-being of staff and students and in understanding their experiences of being in a university.
Dr Thom Cochrane
Senior Lecturer
Thom manages and implements mobile learning projects (over 50 to date) and is interested in mobile learning, social software, communities of practice, and SoTEL. He was awarded Ascilite Fellow (2011) and is a Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT) (2016). He is a prolific researcher, frequently invited keynote speaker, and on multiple editorial boards of journals in his fields of interest.
Dr John Davies
Senior Lecturer
I am part of the team that is implementing the Ako Aronui framework at AUT. My role includes working with faculties and individual staff who wish to develop their teaching and assessment practices and supporting people who are applying to become fellows of the Higher Education Academy.
Piki Diamond
Ako (Learning & Teaching) Consultant
My teaching and academic philosophy is driven by whakamana, empowering people. As part of the CfLAT team I work towards weaving mātauranga Māori into teaching practices and paper content. I also support academics that wish to learn more about te ao Māori and how it is the uniqueness that is Aotearoa New Zealand.
Julia Hallas
Senior Lecturer
Julia works with colleagues to innovate teaching practice to improve student learning. Contact her for support with curriculum and paper design, assessment methodology, innovative pedagogic practice, teaching methods, online learning, and technology adoption processes.
Jaye McIsaac
Learning & Teaching Advisor
Jaye has worked in tertiary and higher education in Aotearoa and the UK. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Jaye contributes to the Ako Aronui programme and she coordinates the HEA institutional accreditation.  She is fascinated in all aspects of learning and teaching with interests in learning design and curriculum development.  
Dr Vickel Narayan
Learning & Teaching Consultant
Vickel has a keen interest in mobile and social media tools and how it could be effectively used to engage students and teachers in the teaching and learning process, and enabling learner autonomy, ownership, and creativity. Vickel’s more recent focus has been investigating mobile AR/VR for enabling authentic learning, and learner-generated content and context.
Emily Whitehead
Research Assistant and LATTE
Emily works part-time as a research assistant and a Learning and Teaching Technology Enabler, working on both digital and research projects. She is part of the Ako Aronui team, supporting the creation of resources, processes and structures for the new programme. She is also undertaking her MA (Ancient History).

Dr Claudio Aguayo
Senior Researcher and Research & Development Director of the App Lab
Claudio coordinates and provides leadership on research projects exploring innovative emerging learning technologies and pedagogies. Claudio also provides academic advice and support, and supervises Masters and PhD students.
Victorio Burcio-Martin
Digital Media Producer
Victorio has been working in Digital Production for over a decade, navigating through all the changes of the digital universe. He is passionate about what he does, and the latest applications of emerging technologies. His work is driven by Learning and Teaching support and research, developing and publishing apps designed for students, both independently and as part of the App Lab.
Taylor Pringle
Digital Media Designer
Taylor is a Creative Technologist with experience in website and mobile app UX/UI design, augmented reality, and 3D modelling and printing. Her primary focus at CfLAT will be mobile app design and development.
James Smith
Digital Media Designer
James is a designer and educator developing emerging digital tools for teachers and learners. His skillset includes UX/UI development, designing for Augmented and Virtual Reality environments, and data visualisation.
Sophia Spivak
Digital Designer
Sophia has an extensive background in communication design, spanning over a decade and across brand, print, web and mobile. At the App Lab, her skills are put to use primarily in mobile app UX/UI design and development. She has a Master’s in Communication Studies (First Class Hons) and is currently a doctoral student in at AUT.
Hohepa Spooner
Lecturer (Te Ara Poutama and CfLAT) and Operations Director of the App Lab
Hohepa Spooner is lecturer at Te Ara Poutama, The Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Development, and member of the Digital Media team at the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CfLAT). He is engaged in the revitalization of Māori language, culture and knowledge through digital media. His interests include developing digital resources like eBooks and Apps for teaching and learning.

Learning Technologies Team

Nawal Chanane
Learning Technology Support
Nawal's main role within CfLAT is to provide support for learning technologies, mostly dealing with academic staff on integrating Blackboard, Mahara, Blackboard Collaborate and My MediaSite in their courses for an enhanced teaching experience. With more than 12 years of experience as an e-learning technologist at a university level, Nawal has been involved in the design and development of distance education programs. Her focus is on promoting the adoption and effective use of e-learning technologies.
Jin Hong
Multimedia Producer (Team Leader)
He provides specialist knowledge and expertise in the design and development of digital and other media to support technology enhanced learning and teaching experiences for students and lecturers at the University. He sources and evaluates the latest technologies, assessing their suitability for teaching and learning and implementing them where appropriate.
Tom Hood
Digital Media Support

Tom is working predominantly with lecture capture systems, and plays a significant role in their future development here at the University. Alongside this, he is experienced with all things digital, such as video production, graphic design and animation. Tom provides valuable support in this area to academic staff and students alike, aiming to better the learning environment through the use of digital media

Reza Mohammad Yari
Digital Media Developer
Reza specialises in multimedia technology, his skill sets and expertise includes video production, (capture, recording and editing), design, animation, and audio technology. He is knowledgeable of the newest technologies, which allows him to develop high-quality videos, animations and images. He is creative, passion driven, and possesses artistic talent that he utilises to bring technology and education together to create art.
Lisa Ransom
Blackboard and Projects Support
Lisa provides advice and training to staff in the effective use of Blackboard and other AUT supported learning technologies. She collaborates with and supports academic teams in course and curriculum development, effective authentic assessment strategies and works in partnership with staff on projects including mobile device support and learning design.
Jawyei Wong
Learning Technologist and Developer
Jawyei works primarily with Blackboard Learn and Mahara, providing user support for both systems on the front end as well as troubleshooting and resolving issues on the back end and is involved with planning for future developments of these systems and coordinating support for support teams.
Shen Zhang
Learning Technologies Support
I'm taking a lead role in the learning technologies team, whose primary role is to support staff, mainly lecturers, with their use of Blackboard, Mahara, MyMediaSite and any other university provided technologies. We provide advice and training for staff, technical development and support of the learning tools. As part of CfLAT, my focus has always been the needs of the academics and to help enhancing learning and teaching.
